Help, I Hate Breakfast!

Breakfast does not have to include eggs, bacon, cereal, oatmeal or any of the traditional breakfast fair. Breakfast has always been an especially challenging time for me because I dislike most breakfast foods. If I never ate a scrambled egg again I would not miss it. In fact, I would rather just skip breakfast all together and be happy with my cup of coffee. I have tried to convince myself that with enough creamer my cup of coffee is actually an energizing breakfast smoothie. Somehow I never quite convinced myself of that theory. So I started my quest for breakfast … Continue reading

Michael Phelps’ Olympic Size Diet

I don’t envy Michael Phelps’ exercise regime, but who wouldn’t love to adopt his diet? The 23-year-old swimming sensation recently revealed what fuels his intense daily workouts in the pool… and to say that the Olympic athlete puts away a ton of food is an Olympic sized understatement. Phelps says his recipe for swimming success involves eating a jaw-dropping 12,000 calories a day. That’s more than most pregnant women eat in a week. Okay, maybe not, but it is darn near close. According to nutritionists, the average man of the same age and height (Phelps is 6’4”) should be ingesting … Continue reading

Spotlight on Breakfast: Baked Apple Cinnamon French Toast

I have recently begun to make a more concerted effort towards eating breakfast. Not only does it boost your metabolism, but it helps our body wake up and it staves off cravings for less than ideal snacks later in the morning. However, I generally hate cold cereal. Not to mention the fact that I have five pairs of big blue eyes staring at me every morning asking, “What’s for breakfast mom?” With that said, I figured that I would spotlight breakfast this week and offer some of our favorite fair for both fancy mornings and mornings on the run. Baked … Continue reading

Welcome to a new series here in Media Reviews, where we will get to know our Families.com bloggers a little bit better. Our first interview will be with Valorie Delp. Valorie, how long have you blogged for Families.com? I started in June of 2006. What topics do you blog about? Skipping Breakfast Will Not Help You Lose Weight

Most people who lose weight and keep it off are breakfast eaters. There is a reason for that. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is not just something cereal companies came up with to sell cereal. Eating breakfast helps people to manage their hunger better and thereby make better food choices throughout the day. James O. Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado, says that breakfast helps us to spread out our hunger and manage food choices better throughout the day. He also says that people who eat breakfast don’t get … Continue reading

Do Your Pets Help With Chores?

Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby do. Or at least they like to think they do. Mostly they just keep me company, but to a great extent that helps. It makes my chores go faster! Wayne’s always been amazed how consistent they are with helping me. Each of them picked the tasks they like helping me with best and every time I do them there they are, my little helpers. Murphy Helps With… Almost everything. He helps me: 1) bring in the mail 2) mail stuff out 3) bring in groceries 4) load up recyclables for dropping off (Which sometimes he … Continue reading

What Kind of Blogger are You?

I wanted to talk a bit about the different types of bloggers out there, because it seems like a lot of people get this mixed up. When I tell people that I blog for a living, they think that I’m writing up blogs about what my cat ate for breakfast this morning (which since I don’t have a cat, would make for an incredibly boring blog) or whatever other random thought pops into my head. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that my blogs on here tend to be a little bit random at times, but they do at … Continue reading

Ask a Food Blogger: How Do You Create a Menu Plan?

I’m excited to answer my first food blogger question: I know I would eat healthier and we’d eat more meals at home if I had a weekly menu plan. But how do you go about creating one? You are correct on both counts: menu plans will help you eat healthier, stick to certain goals, and it will decrease the likelihood that you have to get take out for lack of preparation. One thing that can help with menu preparation is recipe software. Most recipe software has grocery list features as well as menu planning features. I have written before about … Continue reading

Eleven Months Old

As I contemplate the fact that my daughter is now eleven months old, I cannot help having mixed feelings about how quickly my baby girl is growing up! I feel like a made more effort with my daughter (than I was able to with my son) to cherish every stage of her infancy. Knowing from experience the second time around, I did not want to take the short lived precious moments with my infant for granted. Even with this mindset and the clear effort to enjoy my little one, I feel like her babyhood as gone by far too fast. … Continue reading
